To find out if your toilet tank is leaking, add a small amount of food coloring to the tank, and then wait. DO NOT flush the toilet! The ideal time to do this is right before you go to bed. Check the bowl in the morning. As long as you did not flush, there should NOT be any color in the bowl.
If the water in the bowl DOES have color in it, that means that water is seeping through to the bowl from the tank. It could mean that you have a crack in the tank, but generally instead of leaking into the bowl, the water will leak onto the floor. Usually, this means that water is getting past the flapper or flush valve. This will require changing some tank parts.
The general rule of thumb is: Replace the flapper, then replace the flush valve, then replace the tank -- in that order.
